Assessment of nutrition knowledge and dietary intake in patients with kidney stones

Background: kidney stones  are third common urinary – genital system disorder after urinary tract infection and prostate disease In most patient  these stones are Idiopathic  have not  relation with heredity. Needs assessment in the field of nutritional information led patients. Needs assessment in the field of nutritional information in patients led us perform This study aimed to assess the knowledge and behavior of patients with kidney stones.

Methods:In this cross-sectional study  on 106 patients with kidney stones referred to three specialty and subspecialty clinics affiliated with  Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences were selected. Data collection was in form of questionnaire designed in 3 parts: demographic information, questions about knowledge and information related to questions about patients' nutritional behaviors that was conducted as face to face interviews.

Results: More than half of patients had low knowledge,  41.26 percent had intermediate knowledge and 15.9 percent had  acceptable knowledge. Nutritional behavior of the participants in this study, is about 54 percent weak, 31% intermediate and 15% good.  The most correct answer in the knowledge and behavior related to fluid intake. And lowest level in scores was obtained in the knowledge of food sources of oxalate and in dietary behavior was salt on the table and then dietary intake of oxalate.

Conclusion: This study showed that a lot of of patients with kidney stones had not appropriate knowledge and practice in their nutrition. Considering the role of nutrition, especially in the prevention recurrence of kidney stones, nutrition education should be the basic principles in the treatment of these patients
